HARTBEESPOORT

Hartbeespoort, often affectionately called Harties, is a popular resort town located north of Johannesburg, best known for the stunning Hartbeespoort Dam and the thrilling whitewater rapids of the Crocodile River. Visitors can enjoy stunning views of both from the Hartbeespoort Aerial Cableway, which takes you up to the top of the Magaliesberg Mountains. If you’re into diving, there is Miracle Waters, a unique spring-water dive site in a former chrome mine. Animal lovers won’t want to miss the Ann van Dyk Cheetah Centre, a sanctuary dedicated to the protection of big cats.

Constructed in 1923 to supply irrigation water, Hartbeespoort Dam has evolved into a hub for watersports and leisure, complete with its own yacht club. The surrounding fertile farmland, nourished by the dam’s canals, produces tobacco, wheat, lucerne, fruit, and flowers. Visitors can admire sweeping views of the dam and its greenery from the bridge spanning the lake, while enjoying the variety of dining, shopping, and relaxation options nearby – including a local animal park.

Harties offers a rich mix of activities, from relaxing boat cruises and wildlife experiences at the Lion and Safari Park, Elephant Sanctuary, and Monkey Sanctuary, to hiking trails and cultural visits to the Chameleon Village. Golf enthusiasts can also explore several courses in the area.

For shopping and everyday convenience, Village Mall Hartbeespoort is the place to go, featuring around 60 stores – including several large anchor retailers within its 24,000m² footprint. With free parking and a lively atmosphere, it’s known locally as “Die Hart van Harties” – the heart of Harties.
